~2 hours away — Sarlat & the Dordogne
One of the most beautiful medieval towns in France. Go on a Wednesday or Saturday for the legendary market in the old town centre — foie gras, duck confit, truffles, walnuts, the works.
The Dordogne valley and its castles perched above the river are straight out of a storybook. And since Alice is from Bergerac, this one is close to her heart — make sure to visit the Lascaux caves, one of the world's most extraordinary prehistoric sites, just a short drive away!
While you’re in the South West
Since many of you are travelling from far away, we thought we'd share a few of our favourite spots to make the most of your trip!
30–45 min away — Saint-Émilion
A fairytale medieval village entirely surrounded by UNESCO-listed vineyards. Visit a château, taste world-class Merlots, and stroll the cobblestone streets. The monolithic church carved into the rock is not to be missed. Best as a half-day or full-day trip from Bordeaux.
Further afield — The Basque Country
If you have a few extra days, head south to Biarritz, Bayonne or Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Incredible food (pintxos!), a distinct culture, and some of the most dramatic coastline in France. From there, San Sebastián in Spain is just a hop away.
